Custom Motorcycle Headlights

Changing the headlight can improve both looks and lighting. Pay attention to lamp type, electrics, and beam aim.

The headlight is one of the most frequently modified parts, both for looks and for better lighting at night. To keep the result safe and fair to other road users, there are a few things to watch.

Lamp options

Match your bike's electrical system

First check whether your lighting system is AC (straight from the stator) or DC (from the battery). LED lamps generally need a stable DC supply. Add up the total electrical load so the battery does not run down, and use the correct socket so you do not have to cut the wiring harness.

Aim the beam

A bright lamp aimed too high dazzles oncoming riders. Set the beam height in front of a flat wall: the top edge of the low beam should sit slightly below the height of the lamp itself.

Stay within the rules

Use white or light yellow light for the main lamp, and keep the headlight on during the day as required by local traffic regulations.

Tip: keep the original lamp and reflector. Genuine components remain useful for roadworthiness inspections or if you want to return the bike to standard.
